Finding a hotel in Paris is not really a hassle.

Although parisian palaces feature high on the radar, a new generation of hotels is appearing in the capital – with less lavish decoration but with as much style. And the good news is that these small establishments are affordable.

They can be found in trendy popular districts on the Right Bank: Pigalle, Ménilmontant, République, Bastille, the Sentier, the Marais, or even in the 20th arrondissement.

With interior design by architects (hôtel Fabric by Vincent Bastie, hôtel Emile by Alfred Klopper), designers (Mama Shelter, by Philippe Stark), teams of artists-designers-photographers-stylists-friends-of-the-owners (hôtel Amour, hôtel Edgar), or fashion designers (hôtel Original, by Stella Cadente), they offer both good taste and a dose of spiritual enrichment. What’s more, Parisians often like to spend a quiet romantic evening here with a loved one.

How to find good hotels

To pick out a good one, take a look for example at Le Fooding, which lists ‘the most stylish B&Bs and hotels’ in Paris.

Travellers looking for classy and cool addresses will keep track on travel and lifestyle magazines (AD, Condé Nast Traveler) on Twitter and Instagram, which are full of ideas and up-to-the-minute commentaries by their journalists.

You can also download the Parisian City Guide from the deco magazine Ideat and the app of the magazine The Good Life, ‘TheGoodSpots’.

As for families, they will track prominent decorators, like Dorothée Meilichzon (hôtel Paradis), Sophie Hanniet (George Opéra), Julie Gauthron (hôtel Crayon), or Marie Thévenin (Studio 22), particularly attentive to the cause of kids.

A last option: seek out the latest chefs and pâtissiers. As in palace hotels, where they work you will generally find a nice little hotel with tables that draw crowds of trendy Parisians. Some examples include: L’hôtel du Temps, with a tea room where you will find the world’s best pâtissier of 2005, Christophe Michalak. All for less than 200 euros. That is worth searching for!
