Paris hosts Fashion Week in January, with lots of fabulous events for style aficionados to enjoy. The city is a great shopping destination at any time of year, January in particular because it marks the start of the winter sales. Get ready to shop until you drop!
KEY EXHIBITIONS IN JANUARY 2022 IN PARIS
Winter is the perfect time to catch up with all the current exhibitions – while staying warm indoors. Although museums have been closed for several weeks because of the health crisis, a number of them have adapted to the situation by offering online visits and highlighting upcoming major, surprising or original events. And it is highly likely that some will be prolonged to enable visitor to discover them as soon as museums reopen. Major exhibitions to look out for should establishments reopen in January:

Starting with Yves Saint Laurent at the museum, a major exhibition to mark the 60th anniversary of the French couturier’s first collection. This exhibition will take place at several venues: at the Centre Pompidou, at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, at the Musée du Louvrein the Galerie d’Apollon, at the Musée d’Orsay with the passion of Yves Saint Laurent for Marcel Proust, at the Musée National Picasso-Paris as the works of the Spanish painter inspired many designs, and of course at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris, from 29 January to 15 May 2022.

EVENTS AROUND FASHION
The fashion Week
In January each year, Paris is top dog on the catwalk during Fashion Week. On this occasion, the biggest names in fashion, celebrities and journalists flock to Paris to discover the new trends in ready-to-wear for men (from 18 to 23 January 2022) and haute couture (from 24 to 27 January 2022) for the next year. Whilst uncertainty remains as to whether or not to hold fashion shows in public, presentations of the creations will nevertheless go ahead via online fashion shows.
Young designers are also in the spotlight at the showroom Sphère imagined by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (du 19 au 23 janvier 2022). Given the uncertainties linked to the health crisis, the fashion shows and presentations of new collections are now taking place in both physical and digital formats (definitive calendar to be released on 3 January 2022). What’s more, if the events take place in public, the whole show also takes place outside, especially around important Parisian landmark sites particularly in the vicinity of top Parisian venues like the Grand Palais, Palais Brongniart or the Palais de Tokyo, where you can easily spot famous faces including models and fashion designers. Keep an eye out!
Winter sales 2022
Fashion is of course related to shopping. And this is one area where Paris comes into its own. The city is a genuine shopping mecca. If you’re looking to refresh your wardrobe, pick up a must-have accessory or purchase the It-bag of the moment, there’s no better time for it. January, as all Paris fashionistas know, offers rich pickings with the start of the much-awaited winter sales on Wednesday the 12 January until Tuesday 8 February 2022: four whole weeks of bargains, with reductions of up to 70%.
PARISIAN CONCERTS AND SHOWS IN JANUARY 2022
Parisian cultural life goes on, whilst adhering to government health measures. So, begin the year 2022, by heading to one of the capital’s famous concert and show venues to see this new season’s unmissable line-up.
For New Year, don’t miss the concerts at the Eglise de la Madeleine («The Vienna waltzes» by Johann Strauss, 1st January 2022 at 7pm), at the Eglise Saint-Germain-des-Prés (« The Four Seasons » by Vivaldi and « A Little Night Music » by Mozart, at 8.45m), at the Maison de la Radio et de la Musique (Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France, Chœur de Radio France et solistes, the 1st January 2022 at 8pm and 2 January 2022 at 4pm) or at the Eiffel Tower (« The Four Seasons » by Vivaldi, “ Waltzes and polkas ” by Strauss, samedi 1er janvier 2022 à 18h30).
January promises concerts from top artists on the pop, rock, and hip-hop scene! To relive a concert by Queen (5 January 2022), or to listen to one of the greatest French artists, Alain Souchon, go along to the Dôme de Paris-Palais des Sports, in the 15th arrondissement!
La Cigale features urban artists, with concerts by Kerry James (13 January 2022) and Hatik (14 and 15 January 2022. For her « Organique Tour », Zaz is giving two exclusive concerts at Salle Pleyel (28 and 29 January 2022). Finally, the cinema-concert Harry Potter et l’Ordre du Phénix, at the Palais des Congrès de Paris, is the eagerly awaited family event of the month of January (8 & 9 January 2022).
Musicals in Paris at the start of 2022
The great classic musicals are always a great way to start the year with music and with the family. At the Théâtre Mogador, the hit musical « Lion King » continues to thrill audiences. Until the end of the month, at the Hippodrome de Longchamp, the musical «Noah: the will to live », by Essaï Altounian, recounts the story of the Flood and the saving of the animals by Noah. At the Théâtre de Paris, Alexis Michalik stages Producteurs, an adaptation of the award-winning Broadway musical.
For ballet and opera fans, the ballet Don Quichotte by Rudolph Nureyev is at the Opéra Bastille until 2 January 2022 and until 9 January 2022, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées presents « La Vie Parisienne », an opéra bouffe by Jacques Offenbach with mise en scene, decor, and costumes by the great couturier Christian Lacroix!
TRADE SHOWS, FESTIVALS AND OTHER EVENTS IN PARIS
Today, after a year and a half's absence due to the health crisis, the major trade fairs and trade shows are resuming in physical formats. From 29 to 31 January 2022, the trade fair Playtime Paris returns to the Espace Evénements at the Parc Floral de Paris. Playtime Paris is the international children's and maternity trade show that takes place in Paris twice a year. The event brings together more than 500 international brands. It is the must-attend event where industry professionals including designers, buyers, bloggers, journalists, and artists gather. And from 20 to 24 January 2022, the trade show Maison et Objet will be back at the Parc des Expositions de Paris Nord Villepinte. More than just a trade show, it is the benchmark event for all those involved in the art of living, home fashion, interior decoration, and design.
Literature related events
The 6th edition of the event Nuits de la Lecture (20 to 23 January 2022) will delight literature enthusiasts. Organized like the Nuit des Musées event, it brings people together and makes literature more accessible. The public are invited to physical or digital (free) events around the theme of love, which embraces the message of Victor Hugo: « Aimons toujours! Aimons encore! » (‘Let us love always and more’). Once again, libraries, bookshops and cultural venues are opening their doors for this unique evening to share their love of literature at special events. Shared readings at the Maison de Victor Hugo, animated reading « La Belle et la Bête. Du conte au film » (‘Beauty and the Beast. From the fairy tale to the film’) at the Cinémathèque française - Bibliothèque du film, « Emmanuelle Devos reads James and Nora » at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Isild Le Besco reads « Qui se souvient de la mer » by Mohammed Dib at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and an evening with Chloé Delaume (Prix Médicis 2020) at the Centre Pompidou…
