In the world of design, art and industry go hand in hand, creating a culture of objects that then become… cult! If you go for unusual styles, misappropriated materials, flights of fancy or minimalism, then a design shopping tour is the thing for you. Go out to all corners of Paris and encourage the wild imagination of the designers as they reinvent the objects that populate our everyday life.
Design reinvents the everyday
In the universe of contemporary design, international stars and talented newcomers have all flocked to Paris. Their boutiques are dotted all over the capital and their talent is to be found in the department stores; in restaurants, cafés and hotels, where they dream up the decoration and furnishings - places to see and be seen for a taste of the latest contemporary lifestyle. In each neighbourhood, usually in spring and summer, open days are organized… get the details from our reception staff or check the “Focus on…” highlights of our “What’s On” section.
In Paris, rising new stylists are to be found in number in the Passage du Grand Cerf or in the paved courtyards of the Village Saint-Paul at the heart of the Marais, where their imaginative and avant-garde boutiques provide plenty of new decoration ideas. Minimalist or baroque, but always original, made of all kinds of materials and bursting with bright colours, the design objects you find there will not fail to fascinate.
Every year during four days, the “Designer Days” give you the opportunity to discover the creativity of the capital of design in a convivial atmosphere. You can follow a trail that covers dozens of exhibition spaces all linked by a single theme. It’s the occasion for a different kind of tour, on both sides of the Seine, enjoying Paris while visiting boutiques and studios overflowing with inspiration.
Another event popular with enthusiasts of contemporary design is the “Puces du Design”, a design market highlighting the 2nd “arrondissement” in the Passage du Grand Cerf and the Montorgueil neighbourhood. At this market devoted to 20th-century designers, nostalgia-lovers will delight in finding key pieces of furniture and objects from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. You’ll also have the chance to meet the up-and-coming representatives of the latest trends. Also at the “Puces du Design', exhibitions are organized to highlight the work of favourite stylists.
Last but not least, to be in the know about all the newest arrivals on the design planet and to get to know the rising stars, from France and abroad, you can’t beat the trade fairs: trade professionals hurry to “Maison & Objet” or “Now! Design à vivre” and interested and enlightened members of the public head for “Habiter Paris” or “Court-circuit”. On occasions such as this, sales shows are organized around the designers.
