Cheaper shopping in Paris is simple! Visitors from outside the European Union can claim back VAT (value added tax) on purchases made in France. Shops and professionals that offer this service have a ‘Tax Free Shopping’ sign or sticker in their window. Cosmetics, wine, champagne, jewellery, gastronomy, time pieces, ready-to-wear, leather goods and luxury goods: all products can be subject to a tax refund.
To be entitled to a tax refund, you must:
- Buy more than €175 of merchandise, on the same day, in the same shop.
- Ask for a tax refund form or slip, in the shop, when you make your purchases and keep the purchase ticket itemizing your purchases. The form must be signed by the retailer and the client.
- Present the duty-free slip at customs on leaving France. You may be asked to produce the objects purchased so that they can be verified. You can easily obtain an electronic duty-free slip by using the Pablo terminals at the airports.
