1 rue des Fossés Saint-Bernard - 75005 Paris

Quartier Latin - 5e Arrondissement

Description

In Cairo, Beirut and Casablanca, the 1920s were the start of emancipation for women artists in the Mediterranean basin. Fairuz, Umm Kulthum, Warda, Lelia Mourad, Asmahan and Dalida were pioneering stars linked with the golden age of Arabic music, song and cinema until the 1970s. Through their careers and lives, their talent and glamour, they were part of the construction of a 20th century Arab identity.

The Institut du Monde Arabe highlights these iconic female figures and underlines their contemporary artistic heritage in an exhibition running from 27 January 2021 to 25 July 2021.  An immersive exhibition with reconstructions of sets, sound installations, projections, photos, documents, personal objects, outfits and jewellery.

Institut du monde arabe

A cultural bridge between France and the Arab world
The Arab World Institute was founded in 1987 by France and the states of the Arab League with the aim of disseminating and promoting all the facets of Arab culture. A place where people can meet and exchange ideas with others, the Institute has for the last 30 years contributed to the consolidation of the cultural, political, economic, and social links between France and the Arab world.

A richly diverse programme of exhibitions and events in a world famous building
Comprising a museum, temporary exhibition areas, an auditorium for hosting live performances, cinema screenings, and conferences, a multimedia library (‘médiathèque’), a language and culture centre (‘centre de langues et civilisations’), a bookshop, and prestigious reception areas, the AWI building was designed by Jean Nouvel and Architecture Studio. Located in the heart of historic Paris, it is recognized throughout the world as a symbol of contemporary architecture.

An essential role in an unprecedented international context
The AWI’s mission to promote a better understanding of the Arab world and foster Franco-Arab dialogue has become even more essential. Apart from providing an ambitious programme of artistic events, the Arab World Institute has strengthened its role as a ‘think tank’ on the contemporary Arab world and as a place where all the players — particularly the economic players — in France and the Arab world can meet and exchange ideas.
