Verdi’s La Traviata gets a new lease of life at the Opera Bastille under the baton of conductor Dan Ettinger, with stage direction by the French filmmaker Benoît Jacquot, winner of a César (the French equivalent of an Oscar). Marina Rebeka and Anna Netrebko take turns singing the role of the courtesan Violetta Valery, who is torn by conflicting emotions. Knowing full well she will die soon, she has fallen hopelessly in love with the young nobleman Alfredo Germont. Alas, their love for each other will not be able to save her. Based on La Dame aux camélias, a play adapted from a novel by Alexandre Dumas, this opera in three acts, which premiered in 1853, is superbly performed in this all-new production in Paris.

Sung in Italian with surtitles in French and English

Opéra National de Paris - Opéra Bastille

The Opéra Bastille was designed by Carlos Ott, a Canadian-Uruguayan architect, in November 1983 after an international competition in which 1,700 architects participated. It was later opened on 13 July 1989.
The architecture is characterized by the transparency of its facade and the use of the same materials on both the interior and the exterior of the building.
With its 2,700-seat auditorium with homogeneous acoustics, unique stage equipment, integrated workshops, costumes and accessories, and work and rehearsal rooms, the Opéra Bastille is a great contemporary theatre.
