Quartier des Halles

The district is named after the old market district of Paris, nicknamed the ‘belly of Paris’, which was subsequently transferred to Rungis in the Val-de-Marne suburb in the 1970s. Les Halles in central Paris now houses the Forum des Halles (a huge shopping centre with a 30-cinema multiplex, an indoor swimming pool and the Forum des Images cinema), several restaurants, bars and trendy shops, not to mention the world’s biggest underground station, Châtelet-Les Halles. The surrounding streets, Rue Montorgueil, Rue Quincampoix and Rue Tiquetonne, provide a pleasant stroll through the area. Les Halles district is undergoing a transformation and will soon become a modern and vibrant space with a brand-new set of gardens, a bigger pedestrian area, a modernized underground station and the ongoing construction of the ‘Canopy’, a magnificent curvilinear roof inspired by the forest canopy, which will cover the new Forum des Halles.
