Description

Definitely Paris’s most charming museum, it was founded in 1960 in the oldest building in Montmartre, which was also home to a number of artists, including Auguste Renoir, Émile Bernard, Raoul Dufy, Suzanne Valadon, Maurice Utrillo and others. The museum displays a unique collection of paintings, posters and drawings that recount the history of Montmartre, including its artistic atmosphere and workshops, from the Bateau-Lavoir at the Cortot studio to the famous cabarets such as the Lapin Agile and the Moulin Rouge.
Hotel Demarne, a beautiful 19th century mansion, opened for the first time on 17 October 2014. This is where Claude Rose lived says Rosimond of Molière's troupe. Père Tanguy lodged here, and was a colour merchant of the Impressionist painters. Hotel Demarne has been completely redesigned to accommodate temporary exhibitions of a high level and a tea room on the ground-garden, the Café Renoir.
Suzanne Valadon came to live at 12 rue Cortot in 1898 and returned in 1912. She remained there until 1926 with her son Maurice Utrillo and his companion André Utter. Valadon remained famous for being one of the first women painters; as for Utrillo, he left unforgettable views of Montmartre. After decades of neglect, the reconstituted workshop is now open to the public.
