First performed at the Opéra de Paris in 1867, Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Don Carlos’ returns to the city with this production in the original French at the Opéra Bastille. Set in Europe at the height of the Inquisition, this passionate tragedy in four acts relates Carlos’s estrangement from his father, Philippe II of Spain, as the two men enter into conflict and betray each other for the love of Elisabeth of Valois. Theatre director Krzysztof Warlikowski, who is reputed for being a provocateur, has brought together some big-name international artistes, not least the tenor Jonas Kaufmann and the soprano Sonya Yoncheva.

Opéra National de Paris - Opéra Bastille

The Opéra Bastille was designed by Carlos Ott, a Canadian-Uruguayan architect, in November 1983 after an international competition in which 1,700 architects participated. It was later opened on 13 July 1989.
The architecture is characterized by the transparency of its facade and the use of the same materials on both the interior and the exterior of the building.
With its 2,700-seat auditorium with homogeneous acoustics, unique stage equipment, integrated workshops, costumes and accessories, and work and rehearsal rooms, the Opéra Bastille is a great contemporary theatre.
