Église Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois

2 place du Louvre - 75001 Paris

Louvre - 1er Arrondissement

Situated opposite the Louvre Museum, the church is of Merovingian origin. The first church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois was destroyed in 885-886, then rebuilt in the 11th century. Changes were made to the building in the first half of the 12th century and the western portal was built around 1220-1230. The choir and the first bay of the chapel of the Virgin date from the 14th century, the nave and the present porch from the following century, the transept and the choir chapels from the 16th century. The church is in particular associated with the tragic episode of St. Bartholomew's Day.
