The stronghold of Jansenist thought in France, the Abbaye de Port-Royal des Champs is marked by its conflict with the French monarchy. Founded in 1204 in the Chevreuse Valley, it was destroyed, by order of the King, in 1711. Today, visitors to this vast 30-hectare estate can discover the ruins of the abbey, a 13th-century dovecote and the building (17th century) with its ‘small schools’ which houses a national museum exhibiting 17th- and 18th-century paintings and engravings.
