Musée des Plans-reliefs - Hôtel national des Invalides

129 rue de Grenelle - 75007 Paris

Musée d'Orsay - Saint-Germain-des-Prés - 7e Arrondissement

Description

The Musée des Plans-reliefs houses a unique collection: historical models of fortified cities and surrounding countryside, made between the reign of Louis XIV and Napoleon III, all at a 1:600 scale and all using the same techniques. The relief maps were used as military planning tools and have also been a prestigious attribute of heads of state. Today, they are an irreplaceable source of documentation on the sites that they represent and a precious educational tool. Through these models, visitors have an aerial view of cities, and their buildings and fortifications as well as the landscapes which surround them.
