Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte

Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte - 77950 Maincy

77 - Seine-et-Marne

Description

Before Versailles, there was Vaux le Vicomte !
Located 50 km southeast of Paris, Vaux le Vicomte offers the living experience of the 17th century.
Built in 1661 for Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV’s Finance minister, whose tragic fate came about after an extraordinary party he threw for the young Sun King. Fouquet had the talent to reveal the 3 main artists of the time: the architect le Vau, the painter Le Brun, and the gardener Le Nôtre. These were the artists who the King later chose to construct Versailles. Owned by the de Vogüé family since 1875, each successive generation has devoted themselves to its stewardship.

Garden

Vaux-Le-Vicomte is the founding example of the classical French garden. Thanks to Nicolas Fouquet, the famous gardener André Le Nôtre was able to manifest the true extent of his genius in 1641. He was the first to bring together the technical, scientific and artistic knowledge of his age on a grand scale to create a garden.
