Maison de Nicolas Flamel

51 rue de Montmorency - 75003 Paris

Châtelet - Les Halles - 3e Arrondissement

Description

This house, considered the oldest house in Paris, was built at the beginning of the 15th century by Nicolas Flamel and his wife Pernelle. The couple wanted to turn the three-storey house into a place where poor people could live free of charge. In exchange, they asked them to say a few prayers, as indicated by the inscription on the facade. According to legend, Nicolas Flamel was an alchemist who knew how to transform lead into gold and had discovered the secret of the Philosopher's Stone. Today, passers-by can admire the engraved and sculpted ashlar facade, which is a listed building. The place also houses a restaurant.
