A remarkable musical heritage

Paris has a rich musical heritage and offers the opportunity to enjoy performances in some unique venues

From the monumental Palais Garnier to the soon-to-open Philharmonie, Paris possesses exceptional music venues in architectural styles ranging from classical to boldly modern.

The Opéra Garnier and the Opéra Bastille, which have been brought together under the banner of the Opéra National de Paris, reflect this diversity: their architecture and line-up of performances could not be more different.

While the belle époque Opéra-Comique remains a bastion of classicism, Paris’s music scene has witnessed much change and modernization over the past two decades. The Cité de la Musique opened in 1995 in the Villette district in a striking new building designed by Christian de Portzamparc. Since 2015, the Cité de la Musique, renamed the Philharmonie 2, has been linked to the Philharmonie de Paris - the brand new temple of symphonic music designed by architect Jean Nouvel.

More recently the Salle Pleyel, a prestigious venue for classical music concerts, has undergone a renovation.
