Summer 2022: Paris in Olympic Forms!
The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics are rapidly approaching! And the city of Paris is getting ready. In 2022, following on from the Olympic Days on 25 and 26 June, Paris will be on ‘Olympic form’ with free events throughout the summer
After celebrating Olympic Days on the last weekend of June, Paris throws the spotlight on Olympism all summer, until 15 September 2022. This large-scale event has a line-up of workshops, courses, gatherings, an emphasis on sport, but also on all art forms. The festival ‘Olympic Forms’ is not just about sport! The aim of the event is to create bridges between sport and art. In this way, the festival transmits the values of Olympism - surpassing oneself, discovery, sharing, curiosity - and highlights all practices, be they physical, cultural, or visual.
A festive event in Paris
65 events, coordinated by the Carreau du Temple and Paris 2024, will be held throughout the summer in Paris as part of the Olympic Formsfestival. Lots of events and activities to choose from for kids and grown-ups to enjoy solo, with friends or with family.
Activities also take place during Paris Plages, from 9 July to 21 August 2022, on the quaysides of the Parc Rives de Seine or around the La Villette Canal Baisin.
Le Barboteur, an itinerant cultural barge, is also part of the celebrations with Quartiers d’été, from 1 July to 28 to 20 August 2022. On the programme: five free themed festivals on the banks of the Paris canals.
Mixing sport with the arts in Paris
The FGO Barbara - 2,500 m² multidisciplinary space located in the Goutte d’Or district – offers Barbès Music Boxing, an introduction to boxing with a DJ, in Square Léon in the 18th arrondissement, from 25 June to 3 September 2022.
In the same spirit, La Place and Paris Basketball, combine basketball 3x3 and Djing during the qualifying rounds of the Playin’Paris tournament. These qualifying matches take place from 3 July to 31 August 2022. The final will be played on October under the Canopée of the Forum des Halles.
For an original experience, go along to the pool of the Butte-aux-Cailles on 3 and 4 September 2022 for the event Singing in the pool. Real opera singers serenade you as you swim in the pool!
Also, from 30 June to 31 August 2022, there will be podcasts and street interviews on the theme of the links between sport and music. A creation of Track_05, a Parisian hybrid structure (digital media, web radio, label, creative studio, etc.).
The dance arts are particularly well represented during the Parisian Olympic Forms festival with dynamic associations that run numerous workshops and activities. Micadanses, for example, offers a wide range of choreographic practices - Pilates, gaga, hip hop, pointe technique, tango, dance lifts, etc. - in an open-air studio.
At the end of August 2022, the choreographic event ‘Carnavaler Paris 18 Nord & Sud’ features outdoor urban dance, live music, and group performance at Square Charles Hermite, in the 18th arrondissement, a few steps from Porte de la Chapelle.
Exciting exhibitions in Paris
The association Analog Sport and the cultural centre Le Consulat Voltaire teaming up to present a collective exhibition on women's sport photography. Titled ‘Zone Mixte’, the exhibition takes place at the Consulat Voltaire, in the 11th arrondissement, from 20 July to 6 August 2022.
Until 4 September 2022, the gates of the Saint-Jacques Tower will host a free exhibition of photos celebrating the great sports figures of the Games since 1924: Johnny Weissmuller, Micheline Ostermeyer, Marie-Josée Perec and Michael Phelps. Meet in the peaceful square of the Saint-Jacques Tower, in the heart of Paris.
Another festival photo exhibition not to miss is ‘Olympic Forms’, which celebrates the first Women’s Olympics. Held in Paris in 1922, these Olympic Games marked the history of the sport and the visibility of women in sport. Showing from 23 June to 31 August 2022 at two locations: the railings of Square Villemin in the 10th arrondissement and in the famous and historic Arènes de Lutèce, in the 5th arrondissement.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games welcomes new sporting disciplines. Surfing – which debuted in Tokyo in 2021 – is one of these new disciplines. For Paris 2024, the events will take place in Tahiti, on one of the most beautiful and difficult waves in the world: wave Teahupo’o. To celebrate this mythical place and event, a photo exhibition ‘Teahupo’o, la déferlante 2024’ will be shown in several places in the capital from 5 July to 14 September. Also on the programme, film screenings.
Many major Parisian sites will be participating in the summer festival ‘Olympic Forms’: Parc floral de Paris in the Bois de Vincennes, Jardins d’Éole, Parc de la Villette, Parvis du Centre Pompidou, Point Éphémère, Parc André Citroën, Centquatre, Institut suédois, Parc de Choisy… and many more!
