Métro Parisien LieuThe Parisian metro, witness to the history and life of the city
It is impossible to talk about Paris without mentioning the Métro, which is part of the city’s heritage. It is a witness to the construction of the city, the growth of the city and technological innovations. The Métro is an underground museum of social, political, cultural and daily life in Paris. The first line opened some 110 years ago, on 19 July 1900, notably to provide transport to and from the World Fair. Today, it is still line 1 linking the Château de Vincennes to the Grande Arche de la Défense. And, since 1900, the names of stations, their decoration and their layout evoke and represent the personalities, events and places that have marked Paris, France and sometimes the world. At Concorde station, you can read the Declaration of Human Rights written on white tiles. At Louvre Rivoli station, display cabinets containing reproductions of works exhibited in the museum indicate that a visit to the museum has begun. At Parmentier station, the subject is the importance of the widespread introduction of the potato from 1778, which came from Peru to France, following the work of the agricultural engineer Parmentier. At Louise Michel station, the eponymous teacher, anarchist, humanist and heroine of the Commune de Paris is celebrated … And on numerous platforms and in the corridors, anecdotes written on purple RATP signs also give information about the Métro and the characteristics of the different stations. What’s more the Parisian Métro also associates heritage with ecology. It is the fastest and most environmentally friendly mode of transport for getting around Paris.

La Tour Saint-jacques LieuSaint-Jacques Tower
For five centuries, the Saint-Jacques Tower, a starting point for the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella, has been an important feature of the heritage of the Châtelet district. After a long period of restoration work when it was hidden by scaffolding, its richly decorate architecture can now be admired again: 1,000 new pieces of glass were made by master glassmakers to restore the stained-glass windows, and some 900 small to huge pieces of sculpture.

Out-of-print publications available nowhere else, engravings, prints … the choice is huge and they extend along the quayside for over 3 km. The opportunity to take a literary stroll!

Mobilier urbain LieuUrban street furniture, icons of Parisian heritage
The dark green and often rotating Morris columns which offer passers-by information on cultural events sometimes also used to house public toilets or telephones. The 108 Wallace fountains, small monuments in the shape of a cupola supported by four women figures continue to function as they did right from the start and quench the thirst of walkers. The Métro entrances designed by Guimard are representative of the art deco period in Paris. These structures form an emblematic trio of urban furniture in the capital that is recognizable throughout the world.
