Getting around, “responsibly”

Paris, a sustainable tourism destination

The tramway on a “green” roll

Tramways_250_166How can you get around town, while at the same time respecting the environment? In 2006, Paris produced its answer to that very question: by tramway!

The old boulevards of the Maréchaux sud are now criss-crossed every day by the city's tramway n°3 - electrical, quiet, less polluting, regular, fast and reliable.

Parisians and tourists alike have adopted it, also appreciating its green and artistic virtues.
The line is bordered by a trimmed lawn throughout, the pavements have been widened, trees embellish the waiting areas and works by leading contemporary artists such as Sophie Calle and Frank Gehry grab the attention, so unexpected is their presence.

The plan to extend the line to the north, from Porte d’Ivry to Porte de la Chapelle, will make it possible to complete an almost full circuit of the city in a few years from now. At the end of 2009, the tramway n° 2 was also extended, enabling users to travel from La Défense to the Porte de Versailles in around 30 minutes - while being carried and gently soothed by this more ecological way of getting from A to B.
