Description :

Marie d’Orléans, princess and romantic artist, reveals a lot about the aspirations of her time. With a solid and open education from her father, King Louis-Philippe, she was passionate about the arts and practiced drawing and sculpture. Like her older brother, the Duke of Orleans, great patron and collector, she showed innovative taste and forged relations with the artists of her time, like the goldsmith Wagner, the architect Charpentier and the painter Ary Scheffer. In the decoration of her lounge at the Tuileries, she chose a gothic style which went beyond pure fantasy and the approximations of troubadour style towards greater historic precision. With an ensemble of paintings, furniture and personal objects – loaned by her descendant, the Duke of Wurtemberg –, the Musée du Louvre presents a re-creation of this gothic lounge and the private world of Marie d’Orléans. Drawings and sculptures, several on the theme of Joan of Arc, will be displayed. The Louvre thus pays tribute to a woman who reflected the taste and fashion of the 1830s.
