If you were under the impression that in Paris we go to the cinema just to see films, then that’s only half the story. You can also enjoy concerts, meet the performers, see exhibitions, dance the tango or salsa, attend lectures or join in film club sessions. Film buffs certainly are spoilt for choice in Paris: there are even screenings in the open air and in places that you wouldn’t normally associate with the silver screen. Here’s a selection.
Le Latina
Dating from 1913, during the silent era, this is more than a simple cinema: it’s an cultural venue devoted to the whole range of Latin cultures.
Its two screens exclusively show films in their original Latin language (Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Romanian), which explains why a good number of foreign visitors visit the Latina, often to see films that aren’t distributed in their own countries for a variety of reasons. This programme is complemented with previews, festivals and encounters with film-makers.
A real melting-pot then, not only in the cinemas, but also in the Bistrot Latin on the first floor, a popular meeting-place for aficionados of tango, salsa and sevillanas, from Paris and elsewhere. The first floor is also where exhibitions for the Galerie Renoir are held (paintings, engravings and photographs, etc.)!
So don’t hesitate, go along to the Latina – you’ll find the welcoming atmosphere of the southern countries!
