Long-time jazz aficionados, the Parisian public has given this most intellectual of music movements an important place on the cultural scene.
Jazz in all its manifestations has a seductive, hypnotizing, striking effect. More than any other musical style, jazz is a way of life to cultivate in a variety of ways: concerts, festivals, encounters, exhibitions … Jazz will be a focus of attention in Paris, from March to May 2009. Our dossier “A Springtime of Jazz in Paris” highlights the major events so that you experience this special springtime happening to the full.

Jazzy sounds
Fans of blues, swing, ragtime and New Orleans jazz will love the capital’s many jazz hot spots. The top jazz players perform here as well as small groups for more informal discoveries. The Duc des Lombards was frequented by Henri Texier, Aldo Romano and Martial Solal. It hosts original musicians in a cosy atmosphere. Then on to Le Sunset and Le Sunside, two adjoining clubs with a programme of electric jazz at one and acoustic at the other. Jazz fans will all know Le Caveau de la Huchette, a living legend that resounds with the sound of traditional jazz, swing and middle jazz. The New Morning, known as ‘Niou’, is Europe’s biggest club in terms of capacity; it is also the haunt of the most demanding music lovers. Every year, its festival Colors sends the crowds wild. Musical variations at China with a mixture of jazz manouche, jazz pop groovy, soul and folk. All musical genres are represented at the Petit Journal Montparnasse, where big musical formations, big bands or gospel choirs share the stage. The Jazz Club Étoile (ex-Lionel Hampton) has played host to a string of the biggest names in jazz, from Rhoda Scott to the orchestra of Count Basie. For a jazz evening with a difference, climb aboard the Melody Blues barge offers a swinging cruise on the Seine with exceptionally considerate skippers
