Last autumn, the Folies Bergère, the fabled Parisian venue that has hosted many an exceptional musical and revue, staged “Cabaret, the Broadway musical”... which was a smash hit at Broadway’s legendary Studio 54 and is now taking Europe by storm This production is based on the 1998 version directed by Sam Mendes, which was inspired in turn by the 1972 Bob Fosse film that won Liza Minnelli the Oscar for Best Actress.
Rob Marshall choreographed this minimalist modern revival of the original musical. The story unfolds in the early 1930s in a Berlin nightclub, the decadent Kit Kat Klub, where spectators could temporarily forget the tragic rise of the Third Reich as they watched the singer Sally Bowles and her group of cabaret girls perform.
The Folies Bergère has gone through quite a transformation to host the French adaptation of the show. It has been turned into a pre-war nightclub with red lamps and a cosy atmosphere, and small tables and chairs have replaced the normal theatre seating. This musical is nothing short of a phenomenon, with a triumphal 10-month run, a plethora of rave reviews and 9 Molière nominations. Following an extremely successful 2006-2007 season, “Cabaret, the Broadway musical” will once again be playing at the Folies Bergère in September.
