Paris is not just any city, it’s a mosaic of villages and neighbourhoods, each one with its own special identity, quite different from the others. You’ll soon fall under the spell of the contours, features and particular character of each one. Depending on your mood and taste, choose the Paris that appeals to you using our presentation of the principal Parisian districts. You’ll find details of the places mentioned in our information pages and a full description of everything each of these neighbourhoods has to offer in the guidebook Paris for you, published annually in French and in English by the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau. It is distributed free of charge in all our welcome centres.

Le Marais, Centre Pompidou, Place des Vosges, Musée Picasso
The contrast in styles when you walk from the Marais to Les Halles is astonishing. A few metres from the 16th-century mansion houses, the brightly coloured glass and steel bulk of the Centre Pompidou seems to watch over the centuries. Between history and contemporary art, the whole district moves to the rhythm of the latest trends.
It’s up to you – wander through the maze of ancient streets and alleyways where you can stroll peacefully to your heart’s content, or spend an afternoon window-shopping in the huge shopping centre at Les Halles and the streets around it. Of course, you’re allowed to do both! Behind the Hôtel de Ville, the Marais district has become the centre of gay culture in Paris over the last few years. Artists and designers, encouraged by a public with a thirst for new fashions, have found a place to express themselves in the rue des Francs-Bourgeois. Those interested in antiques will head for the Village Saint-Paul. Make the most of the variety of places to go in and around the old Jewish quarter – there are shops and restaurants, cinemas, theatres and museums… For the latter, make your way to the Picasso and Carnavalet collections to be enlightened about one of the leading lights of the 20th century or the history of Paris. Afterwards, a stop at the Place des Vosges is a must: peace and quiet amidst splendid architecture.
