Paris is not just any city, it’s a mosaic of villages and neighbourhoods, each one with its own special identity, quite different from the others. You’ll soon fall under the spell of the contours, features and particular character of each one. Depending on your mood and taste, choose the Paris that appeals to you using our presentation of the principal Parisian districts. You’ll find details of the places mentioned in our information pages and a full description of everything each of these neighbourhoods has to offer in the guidebook Paris for you, published annually in French and in English by the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau. It is distributed free of charge in all our welcome centres.
People’s Paris
La Villette ; Belleville ; Canal Saint-Martin ; Buttes-Chaumont
You are off to discover a popular, hip and cosmopolitan Paris. This melting pot of a neighbourhood, where many languages are spoken, is in some ways Paris' window on the world.
You might imagine yourself elsewhere – Bangkok, Tunis, Hanoi, Istanbul… And yet, these steep streets, these low-rise buildings standing back-to-back, these paving stones and these little courtyards are definitely Paris. This is the Paris of nostalgia – of ritornellos and popular dances, of cabarets haunted by the voices of Maurice Chevalier and Edith Piaf. The popular dances and stars have gone, but not neighbourhood life, shared laughter, the feeling of belonging to a community: head for the Canal Saint-Martin, La Villette and Belleville! The Buttes Chaumont provides a tranquil and green setting for walkers and fishermen to find a quiet spot.
