Picasso, Modigliani, Foujita, Soutine, Cocteau, Kessel and Hemingway were all regular clients. Since it opened, the brasserie La Coupole, created by two inhabitants from the Auvergne region René Lafon and Ernest Fraux, has been known as a place for intellectual conversation. Some artists such as students of Matisse and Fernand Léger worked on the decoration of the 33 pilasters and pillars of the restaurant. To honour the reputation of the place as somewhere conducive to nourishing the mind and spirit, the chef Jean Philippe Bourgueil serves up traditional dishes (including the not-to-be-missed Lamb curry, a much-loved staple dish since 1927) and more modern dishes. The Coupole is still the biggest brasserie in Paris.
