Informations

Tradition and modernity, two contradictory values nevertheless essential to the creation of the Maison Blanche restaurant. _ _The Théâtre des Champs Elysées sparked controversy when it opens its doors in 1913: the more conservative-minded contested it, the avant-garde acclaimed it. Auguste Perret was an architect who brought polemics with his revolutionary axonometric design. He dared to use reinforced concrete as his sole building material, whereas he gave "France's most modern philharmonic hall" acoustics were as innovative as they were unequalled. _ _Several decades later, the conflict between the old and the modern resurfaced: a restaurant was built on the roof of the scandalous theatre. Yet in 1913, plans already allowed for space devoted to fine cuisine. Nevertheless, it took waiting until 1991 and a proposal from the Brigit de Kosmi agency before the owner – the French Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations - gave its approval. The Théâtre, now classified a historic monument, could not bear the additional load. It is for this reason that the Maison Blanche restaurant was built like a bridge suspended above the building.
