Description
There had never been a permanent collection of letters and manuscripts before 2004, when Gérard Lhéritier founded the first museum dedicated to letters and manuscripts. Today, carried by its growing number of visitors, the Musée de lettres et manuscrits is located in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and enables visitors to relive the most beautiful parts of history.
Letters, literary, historical and scientific manuscripts, musical scores and old books are all on display.
Visitors can enjoy page after page of manuscripts and discover the power of the written word, which brings us closer to the dreams of those who have shaped the world and the origins of the most prestigious works known to mankind.
All these unique pieces of writing are highlighted by a beautiful design and original museum layout, enhancing a guided tour which is organized into five themes: history, the arts, literature, science and music.
With supporting notes and comments, this original design is accompanied by interactive activities, films and photographs. Cutting-edge technology also contributes to revealing the exceptional beauty of these original documents, sometimes in a new light, and gives a better understanding of the thoughts of their famous authors.
Several temporary exhibitions are organized by the museum each year on various themes. Among the most recent are: ‘Jean Cocteau, homme de scène et d’images’, ‘Autour de Jean-Paul Sartre’, ‘Voyage au centre de Jules Verne’, ‘Titanic au cur de l'Océan’, ‘Parlez-moi d'amour’, ‘Saint-Germain des Prés- l'écume des années Vian’, ‘Marcel Proust, du temps perdu au temps retrouvé’, etc.
