Description

The Musée du Fumeur was founded in 2001 by Michka Seeliger and Tigrane Hadengue. It brings together plants, works of art and other items linked to the age-old practice of smoking. Demonstrating the changes in behaviour over the centuries, these collections will make you think about the act of smoking, which was first brought over from the Americas by Christopher Columbus and, after five centuries, has become a worldwide phenomenon.
Everyday items used for smoking from different places and eras are displayed. For example, fragile clay pipes dating back to the 17th century, copper pipes that the Chinese used to carry on their belts to smoke opium, long tobacco leaves hanging from a drying rack, 17 cm apart, like they do in the Périgord, cigar moulds, snuffboxes, a Sioux peace pipe, Tibetan lighters, etc (see attached inventory).
The museum also displays numerous engravings, dating from between the 17th and 20th centuries, by Gavarni, Martinet, Pia, Valerio, Cheret, Gérôme and many others. The ‘plantarium’, an enclosed area which recreates the natural conditions needed for growing tobacco, allows you to observe the growth of tobacco plants all year round, from the time the seeds are sown until they blossom.
A path labelled from A to Z shows the new clear and informative structure of the permanent collection: 26 themed sections with captions and illustrations create a panorama of the smoker through different centuries and cultures.
