Description
Far from the huge museums, here is the exclusive domain of an artist, put together with care in the private family mansion. On the first floor is a display of precious souvenirs collected by Gustave Moreau near the end of his life and a 'small sentimental museum'. In 1895, he built two huge glassed-over workshops on the upper floors, linked by a wrought-iron spiral staircase. Between the plum pink walls, there are more than 5,000 paintings displayed in wooden frames. Tilt your head up to the high ceilings to admire the Italianate, symbolist, fauvist paintings: an eclectic, dream-like collection of work. Chimeras, centaurs, dancing Salomés, Orpheus charming the animals, Jupiter and Semele, bleeding Christ, unicorns, mystical flowers, Galatea, Pasiphaë, Herod: all these are, as the master would say, 'far-off characters from sacred, unknown, and mysterious lands'.
