Originally called Vilcena, the Bois de Vincennes is the remains of an ancient forest belt that surrounded Lutetia. It has always been a royal hunting ground, but gradually, the Bois de Vincennes was neglected by the Kings in favour of its counterpart situated in the West – the Bois de Boulogne - and Versailles. It was rehabilitated under the reign of Louis XV and has since taken back its place in the life of Parisians. Across 955 hectares, the Bois de Vincennes encompasses a zoo, a floral park, a racecourse and the Institut National des Sports. Tel: +33 (0)1 47 74 41 00.
27 km of marked pathways are available for horse riders, cyclists and pedestrians. A favourite among sporty Parisians, the Bois de Vincennes offers two fitness circuits. The short version (1,400 m), which consists of 14 different apparatus, is reserved for beginners. The second lap, which is more difficult, is 2,400 m long and offers 18 different apparatus.
You can hire out bikes from the end of May until the beginning of September (from the end of May to the end of June from 1pm to 6pm; from the end of June until the beginning of September on weekdays between 11am and 7pm). Tel: +33 (0)1 47 47 76 50.
The lakes are also perfect for leisure activities; you can hire boats on both the Lac Daumesnil and the Lac des Minimes.
One of the main attractions is none other than the zoo, which people have been visiting since 1931. Tel: +33 (0)1 43 43 84 95.
Another remnant of the Paris Colonial Exhibition of 1931: the Institut National Bouddhique (not open to visitors). Tel: +33 (0)1 43 41 54 48.
The Arboretum of the Ecole du Breuil (Tel: +33 (0)1 43 28 28 94) and the Paris George-Ville Farm (Tel: +33 (0)1 43 28 47 63) (from October to the end of March, on weekends from 1.30pm to 5pm, and until 7pm from April to September) are also great places to visit.
To add to the cultural aspect, many theatres have been set up within the forest: the Cartoucherie comprises the Théâtre de l'Aquarium, the Théâtre de la Tempête, the Théâtre de l'Epée de Bois, the Atelier du Chaudron and the Théâtre du Soleil.
Finally, the unmissable part of the forest is the Parc Floral which was created in 1969 for the Floralies Internationales (international flower show). This 30-hectare garden presents hundreds of species of flowers through several halls and pavilions such as the Vallée des Fleurs, the Jardin des Dalhias, the Jardin des 4 Saisons and even the Jardin d'Iris. Tel: +33 (0)1 43 43 92 95.
