But what exactly is the Fête de la Musique?
It is a major popular event that is free and open to everyone, amateur musicians and professional musicians, and an uninitiated or well-informed public (every year millions of people make up a curious and attentive audience).
All the musical genres are represented. The aim of the Fête de la Musique is to popularize the playing of music and familiarize the young and not-so-young from all social backgrounds with all forms of musical expression.

Musicians perform on a voluntary basis at performance venues indoors or outdoors and all performances are free to the public. The Fête de la Musique, on 21 June, is an invitation for Parisians and visitors to take a stroll around the streets, squares, public parks and gardens, the courtyards of buildings, museums or châteaux … all favourite places for this special happening.
