Description :
Once upon a time, dominating the Seine, there were four towers in the shape of open books, on a wooden square around a garden. Since 1996, they have been the repository for books; the Haut-de-jardin and Rez-dejardin levels devote their reading rooms – red carpet, steel and natural wood – to printed material, multimedia and many fine exhibitions.
Informations :
Inaugurated in December 1996, the French National Library - architect D. Perrault - can accommodate 1,600 people. D. Perrault chose a resolutely modern architecture, using wood, glass and steel. The collections are housed in four towers surrounding a central garden. The Library is divided into 5 departments : sciences and technical ; art and literature ; political, juridical and economic sciences ; philosophy, history, man and society sciences ; audiovisual.
The collections (300 000 books) can be consulted (children under 16 are not admitted).
A part of the Library, situated at the garden level, is now reserved for research workers.
Two exhibition rooms can house temporary exhibitions dealing on the patrimony of the National Library.
Concerts and conferences are organized in two conference halls.
The rooms can be rented - Contact Mrs Marie-Sylvie PONTILLO at 01 53 79 51 44.
