Conciergerie - Centre des Monuments Nationaux

Monument

District : Marais / Les Halles

Member of the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau

Description :

History buffs with a penchant for the French Revolution will enjoy visiting the Conciergerie and walking down the corridors leading to ... the various reconstructed cells, including the one where Marie-Antoinette was held.
Originally the palace of the Capetian kings and certainly the oldest royal palace in the capital, the Conciergerie became a prison at the end of the 14th century. Its name derives from the Concierge, an official charged with registering prisoners on their arrival.
A visit gives you an idea of the way prisoners lived during the Reign of Terror. You’ll also find many memorable souvenirs of the Revolution.

Informations :

Centre des Monuments Nationaux

This important vestige of the Capetian Palace is a remarkable testimony of the civil architecture of the 14th century, with the Gens d'Armes room, the Guard room and the kitchens. Almost the whole of the lower part of the Palace was turned into a prison during the 15th century; you may visit the cells (in particular Queen Marie-Antoinette's) and discover the history of the French Revolution. The medieval rooms of the Conciergerie with the only remaining parts of the ancient Capetian palace have been fully restored and opened to the public since 11th January 2000.
