Eglise Saint Sulpice

Monument

District : Saint-Germain-des-Prés / Musée d'Orsay / Montparnasse

Description :

Situated in the heart of the 6th arrondissement of Paris, the church of Saint-Sulpice has recently been much in the news after the appearance in 2003 of ... the internationally best-selling novel «The Da Vinci Code», in which author Dan Brown situates a keystone hidden in the church and the murderer who is searching for it…
Built in the 17th century, but with foundations that date back to the 12th century, this building is one of the biggest churches in Paris.
Among the elements decorating the interior a gnomon, - (the part of a sundial which casts a shadow), dating back to the 18th century – stands in the northern arm of the transept in the shape of an obelisk encrusted with a strand of brass wire continuing along the stone flooring in a southerly direction, representing the meridian line.
In fine weather, when the sun is at its height, a ray of light strikes the line on a point which varies according to the time of year.
