Park-garden-walk
District : La Villette / Belleville / Canal Saint-Martin
Description :
The Parc de la Villette has become a popular place to walk for fans of wide open spaces. Stretching over 55 hectares, of which 35 are outdoor, this huge area can be discovered on foot or by bicycle. Its two immense grassy areas dotted with 26 ‘follies’, contemporary red-coloured structures are an ideal place to relax or play.
Built on the site of the former municipal slaughterhouses, this huge park open 24/24 combines nature, architecture, play areas, exhibition areas, shows and debates. It is home to the Grande Halle, the Cité de la Musique, the Conservatoire, the Théâtre Paris-Villette, the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, the Géode, the Zénith, the Trabendo, the Cabaret Sauvage and an equestrian centre.
Informations :
The Parc de la Villete extends over 55 hectares - of which 35 outdoor - and is the largest green area in Paris, a "prototype of the urban park of the 21st century"; it combines areas for nature and architecture, play and leisure, exhibitions shows and debating: (Grande Halle, Pavillon Paul Delouvrier, Maison de la Villette, spaces for large tents and cabarets, dance floor...). The Parc de la Villette was designed by architect Bernard Tschumi and provides an opportunity for city folk to relax and fill their lungs with oxygen in this vast domain, on foot or on a gentle cycle ride. It has no walls, no gates, no railings and is open from 6am to 1am. The canal de l'Ourcq runs through the Park, which has many water features: fountains, ornamental ponds, waterfalls... ... 2 walkways have been designed for visitors in a hurry: the first crosses the Park from the porte de Pantin to the porte de la Villette; the second, is elevated and runs along the south bank of the canal. 26 'folies' - a contemporary version of the 'gazebos' of the 18th century are spread throughout the Park at 120 m intervals inviting the walker to leave the path. These amazing differently shaped red structures - some of which are merely ornamental, and others having a range of functional uses - have become the architectural hallmark of the Park. A paved blue path meanders across the Park between the 10 theme gardens that include 3 play areas for children. In the centre of the park the large grassed areas known as the circle and the triangle provide a place for people to relax and enjoy themselves. Finally, at nightfall, the lights come on as if by magic.
