Sainte-Chapelle - Centre des Monuments Nationaux

Monument

District : Notre-Dame – Ile-Saint-Louis

Member of the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau

Description :

Paris’s most famous chapel was built in the 13th century at the order of Louis IX to house the relics of Christ’s Passion, notably the crown of thorns, which ... the future Saint Louis bought from the Emperor of Constantinople. A gem of Gothic architecture, it is easily recognizable by on the one hand its unique ensemble of fifteen glass windows and its great rose window that form splendid walls of light in dominant blues and reds.
Situated on the Ile de la Cité, its design is probably the work of Pierre de Montreuil, one of the great architects of the Gothic period. The Sainte Chapelle is built on two levels, with a lower part, dedicated to the Virgin, and a higher part, with splendid glass windows and fine sculptures.
