With its 40,000 films, the Cinémathèque Française is one the biggest film archives in the world. Founded in 1938, this collection covers almost every film producing country in the world and features items from the 18th and 19th centuries (magic lanterns, optical boxes, etc.), and numerous projectors and cameras from around the world, enabling the visitor to explore almost every stage in the international development of cinematographic technology. In addition, the Cinémathèque also has a collection of costumes, devices, visual art works (drawings, models, posters, etc.) including the skull of Norman Bates’ mother in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, gears from Chaplin’s Modern Times and more.

Listen to the fabulous, often incredible and always exciting story of this rare and unique collection devoted to cinema. Discover collectors who were passionate about cinema and who contributed to this cinema-museum a wonderful showcase of lights and shadows. Thanks to them, the venue boasts some of the greatest treasures in the thrilling history of cinema from its beginnings: optical boxes of the 17th century, magic lanterns, camera obscura, Lumière cinematographe but also legendary costumes of the greatest Hollywood stars (Vivien Leigh, Greta Garbo, Elisabeth Taylor, Louis Brooks…), original posters, studio decors, cult objects like the female robot from the film Metropolis by Fritz Lang or the head of Mrs Bates in Psychose by Alfred Hitchcock.
