Promenade plantée

Park-garden-walk

District : Bercy / Tolbiac / Bois de Vincennes

Description :

This ‘greenway’ crosses Paris’s entire 12th arrondissement (4.5 km) along a former railway line that closed in 1969. It begins behind the Bastille opera house and runs above avenue Daumesnil to the Jardin de Reuilly: it is the famous Viaduc des Arts. The allée Vivaldi then comprises the shopping part of the walk. Then, it continues in tunnels and cuttings to finish at the Porte Dorée and the Bois de Vincennes. Without even thinking about it, you cross an entire neighbourhood of Paris without coming across a car! Created in 1988 by Philippe Mathieux and Jacques Vergely on the former railway line, which from 1859 linked the Place de la Bastille to Varenne-Saint-Maur, the Promenade plantée mixes areas of wild vegetation that had sprung up alongside the railway line with more modern landscaped areas.
