Musée du Moyen Age - Thermes et Hôtel de Cluny

Museum

District : Notre-Dame / Quartier Latin

Description :

This national museum was established in 1843, with the merging of the Thermes gallo-romains and the Hôtel des abbés de Cluny. The « thermes » (baths) date from ... the 1st to the 3rd century and are one of the few remains of Gallo-Roman civilisation in the capital. Free and municipal and the mecca of daily life at the time, these baths were of course open to the public and among the different places still visible today, the frigidarium (cold room) and the caldarium (hot room) are still easily identifiable.
The abbé Jacques d’Amboise was at the origin of the construction of the hôtel de Cluny, at the end of the 15th century : today, it is one of the oldest examples of a private mansion house set between a courtyard and a garden.
The museum has a rich collection or medieval art objects – gold and silverware, tapestries, sculptures, paintings, illuminated manuscripts – amassed by an enthusiastic antique collector named Alexandre du Sommerard. The collection represents a valuable testimony of the life, art and daily activities of the Middle Ages.
Among the major pieces on show in the museum, the most well-known is without doubt the series of 6 « Lady with the Unicorn » tapestries on the theme of plant and animal life, of which 5 also focus on the 5 senses.

Current events

A room in the Hôtel de Cluny is now devoted to everyday life in the late Middle Ages. Hangings, boxes and chests, tableware, shoes, combs, jewellery and even toys are testimonies of our ancestors' domestic and everyday life, belonging to every age and class of society. A section is also devoted to public activities: trade, pilgrimages, travel and political rallies. Rooms for private evening events are available on Tuesday only, on the occasion of patronage or partnership operations. A garden, inspired by the Middle Ages and opened in 2000, surrounds the monument and establishes an original link between the museum's collections and their urban environment. This contemporary creation was carried out by the landscape architects Eric Ossart and Arnaud Maurières.

Informations :

DMF/RMN

The National Museum of the Middle Ages was founded in 1843 by the state who wanted to combine two exceptional edifices : the ruins of the Gallo-Roman baths and the Hôtel of the Abbots of Cluny to house a remarkable art collection assembled by Alexandre du Sommerard. A large part of the ancient thermal baths remain including the frigidarium - cold bath room - with its 13.50 m vault. The former private house (hôtel)- a real jewel of the flamboyant style in architecture - has preserved the volume of its interior spaces and layout. It has been enriched over the years thanks to the addition of exceptional pieces of gold- and silverware, sculpture and tapestries (including the masterpiece 'La Dame à la Licorne); the present collection provides a valuable insight into the richness of artistic activity in the Middle Ages and a valuable witness of medieval society in Europe.
